Top Places to Fly this Fall
If you’re looking to take a getaway this fall, there are plenty of destinations near and far worth visiting this time of year. You may even be able to score a deal, as data from Expedia shows airfare for fall travel is 10% lower than in the summer months! To give you some fall travel inspiration, here’s a list of must-see autumn locations — at home and abroad — to consider before you book a flight.
Hudson Valley, New York, USA
Hudson, New York, draws in visitors year-round for its charming streets, antique shops, and the nearby Catskill Mountains. But, fall is the perfect time of year to visit Hudson for a weekend getaway, which is accessible by a quick drive or train ride after flying into New York City.
With plenty of quintessential fall activities like apple picking, scenic hikes, and foliage viewing throughout the area, you’ll be happy you hit this northeast destination at its peak autumnal beauty.
Bogotá, Colombia
Sometimes referred to as the “City of Eternal Fall”, the high altitude of this South American city gives it a consistently temperate climate year-round. So, you don’t have to worry too much about timing your trip perfectly to enjoy the area’s fall weather.
In the crisp fall air, you can explore the historical district of La Calendaria on foot, hike up Monserrate Mountain for a breathtaking view of the city, or check out indoor attractions like the Botero Museum or the Bogotá Museum of Modern Art when the weather isn’t cooperating. Just keep in mind that the city sits at more than 8,600 feet above sea level, so give yourself time to adjust to the elevation before engaging in rigorous outdoor activities.
Kyoto, Japan
Japan may be known for its springtime cherry blossoms, but the fall foliage can be just as stunning as the maple leaves begin to change. The best viewing is in mid-November, though the fall season ranges from October through mid-December, giving you plenty of time to plan your trip.
From centuries-old temples to contemporary urban settings, you’ll have no problem immersing yourself in Kyoto’s vibrant history, art, and culture this fall.
Limón, Costa Rica
Maybe you’ve seen enough of the changing leaves at home and want to chase the warm weather as long as possible. In this case, consider venturing south to the Caribbean Coast of Costa Rica, in the province of Limón.
Though many may associate this time of year with the rainy season, conditions will dry up near the end of the season, creating some of the most lush, green scenery the area will have all year. Located on the sea, Limón is surrounded by several national parks, so you can fill your days with wildlife viewing, hiking, swimming, and beach lounging.
South Lake Tahoe, California, USA
Back stateside, outdoor enthusiasts will love visiting South Lake Tahoe in the fall. Depending on when in the season you plan your visit, the weather could be drastically different, so make sure to plan accordingly.
In late September, the leaves are just beginning to change, the tourist traffic dies down, and the weather is still warm, meaning you can still get out on the water or enjoy a sunny hike. Later in November, you may hit the first snow of the season, with skiers and snowboarders flocking to the area to get their first ride of the season.
